Which clubs have topped the Premiership table AND gone on to win the title since the play-offs began? Peter King, UK

The play-offs system was introduced in 2003, but only four clubs have done the "double" of topping the round-robin before winning the title in the Grand Final.

Sale were the first, in 2006, Leicester achieved the feat in 2009 and 2010, and the most recent club to do so were Harlequins in 2012.

In the first three seasons of the play-offs, 2003 to 2005, the team that topped the table went straight to the Final. The second and third-placed clubs played a single semi-final for the honour of meeting the table-toppers.

Gloucester finished top in 2003, Bath in 2004 and Leicester in 2005. Each time Wasps came through as winning semi-finalists to win the Premiership.

This season's table-toppers, Northampton, were beaten by Saracens in the semi-finals.
