Stormers' five tries crush Blues
April 8, 2000

The Stormers became the first South African side to win consecutive games in New Zealand with a 39-18 victory over the Blues in Auckland tonight.

The Stormers kept their Super 12 hopes alive and probably ended those of the Blues with this comprehensive and well deserved victory.Springbok wingers Pieter Rossouw and Breyton Paulse each scored a couple of tries and although the Blues enjoyed a greater share of the ball it was the Stormers who took their chances and converted them into points.

The Blues started well enough, taking the lead with a Cashmore penalty. Then the Stormers took a grip on the second quarter , Rossouw and Fleck capitalising brilliantly on Blues' mistakes to give the South Africans a 19-6 half time lead. The Stormers' back row of Roux, Gerber and Krige were outstanding in attack and defence, their backs always looked dangerous.Orchestrated by Braam Van Straaten they seized every opportunity to put the Blues under pressure.

A try by Andrew Blowers early in the second half gave Auckland fans a glimmer of hope but their side were then blitzed by two tries from Paulse, both converted, a Van Zyl dropped goal and a Van Straaten penalty.

Carlos Spencer came on for the final 20 minutes, and Craig Dowd burrowed over for a late try, but the Blues looked very bedraggled by the end. The Stormers were understandably jubilant.
