Northampton today confirmed Don Mackinnon's move to Edinburgh Reivers after four years at Franklin's Gardens.

New Zealand-born flanker Mackinnon played for Saints in their Heineken Cup triumph at Twickenham and captained the side during the World Cup but has decided to move north after his contract expired at the end of the season.

Director of rugby John Steele said: "Don has received a very good offer from the Reivers and feels the move may help his ambitions of a full international cap.

"He has been a great servant to the Saints and led the side very well at the start of the year.

"He goes with our best wishes, and I'm sure he will be a big success in Edinburgh."

Also set to leave the European champions are centre Andy Northey and hooker Chris Johnson, who will join top flight newcomers Rotherham.

Northey, who joined the club from rugby league outfit St Helens, has not been able to command a regular place in the first team, while Johnson has had little opportunity in the front row.

"Andy and Chris have had limited first team opportunities this year and both feel they will have more chance of regular rugby at Rotherham," said Steele.

"Their attitude and professionalism has been admirable this season, and Rotherham have signed two players who will serve them well in their first season of top-flight English rugby."
