Nones free to play domestic rugby
July 13, 2000

Colomiers prop Richard Nones, who was handed a two year ban following a gouging incident during a game against Pontypridd last season will be allowed to participate in domestic rugby next season.

The decision was taken after a meeting between IRB representatives Stephen Baines and Vernon Pugh and their French Federation counterparts.

It was their belief that a domestic ban would be "invalid" according to French Federation legislation, although his ban from European and international rugby would remain.

The Nones affair created uproar in Colomiers at the alleged injustice of his treatment and led to problems when Pontypridd visited France for their return game.

Following this ruling the French Rugby Union will seek an adjustment of the international legislation to bring it into line with their own. This matter will be further discussed when the IRB meet in Capetown at the end of August.
