Richards and Andrew say no to England
July 14, 2000

Dean Richards and Rob Andrew have turned down the chance of greater involvement within the England coaching set-up.

The former international team-mates , now director of rugby at Leicester and Newcastle respectively , were approached as part of the recruitment drive for managers and coaches at A team, under 21 and under 19 levels.

But, although both men expressed an interest and will continue to provide an input into the national structures, neither wished to become more involved, even on a part-time basis.

``We have had productive discussions with a number of candidates for the positions,'' explained Club England chairman Fran Cotton.

``Dean and Rob have both expressed their interest and commitment to working with England at representative level in the future.

``However, they feel at this stage of their career that they need more experience and time at club level before they can enter into a part-time role with England.

``We are currently looking into a development programme, which will be controlled by the appointment of the performance director, with the objective of helping coaches and managers to make the transition from their clubs to an England role either on a full or part-time basis.

``Both Dean and Rob support the idea and as part of Club England they will have an input into the programme.''
