Samoa face must win game
July 14, 2000

Coming off a home friendly victory over Italy, Samoa must have another triumph here Saturday against the United States
to have a chance at capturing the Pacific Rim Rugby Union Championship.

The Samoans must win to have any chance at overtaking Fiji in the six-team tournament and settle for second with a defeat. While the Samoans are favored, they only edged the US team 27-20 last year in Apia in their most recent match.

The Americans began 2-0 but fell out of title contention with away losses to Fiji and Tonga.

"Since it is our last game in the Pacific Rim, our goal is to play to the potential we've shown throughout the competition," coach Duncan Hall said. "To do that, we have to adapt to the power and pace of the Island teams."

Only minor changes are set for the US team. Veteran wing Vaea Anitoni is set to make his record-breaking 46th appearance for the Eagles, and center Juan Grobler rejoins the starting line-up.
