Canada v Japan given the all clear
July 14, 2000

This weekend's Epson Cup clash between Canada and Japan will go ahead after health officals gave the tie the all clear.

Canada's Pat Dunkley contracted necrotizing fasciitis, otherwise known as the flesh eating disease whilst on tour to Fiji and Samoa, and it was feared there may be a risk of contagion amongst the other Canadian players.

However, following extensive medical checks on the rest of the Canadian squad it was decided that there was no risk involved and that the tie with Japan could go ahead.

Dunkley has undergone two operation to control the disease and he now faces plastic surgery to repair his leg.

Canadian coach David Clark said: "He's not out of the woods but he's well on the way to recovery."
