Simon Hodgkinson kicks 17 points to fire an understrength England to a 25-12 victory over Argentina at Velez Sarsfield, Buenos Aires. Jason Leonard won the first of his 114 caps for Will Carling's side who were missing a number of seasoned internationals who declined to travel.

All Black flanker George Scrimshaw scored two tries to help the touring New Zealanders to a 15-11 win against the Orange Free State at the Cricket Ground in Bloemfontein. It was an improved effort from the hosts who had succumbed 20-0 to the tourists in Kroonstad six weeks earlier.

Scrimshaw had been a surprise addition to the squad as he was picked ahead All Black captain Cliff Porter for the tour. He was capped in the first test on the back of his seven tour tries but lost his place and never played for his country again.

The Lions comprehensively overwhelmed Eastern Province 21-0 in the seventh match of their unbeaten 22 game tour. They scored seven converted tries with Arthur Rotherham kicking the seven goals. Their tries came from William Wotherspoon, Randolph Aston, Edward Bromet, Edwin Mayfield and Robert Thompson.

Tom van Vollenhoven returned for the Springboks on tour in New Zealand and scored a try in their 23-12 win against Southland in Invercargill. The match was the 20th of a 29 match tour to Australia and New Zealand that began in May and ended in September.

1962
England's Richard Sharp spearheaded a convincing 24-3 Lions victory over Transvaal in front of 50,000 at Ellis Park, Johannesburg. Captain Arthur Smith scored two tries for the Lions, Bill Mulcahy crossing for another while Sharp converts the tries and added two penalties and a drop goal for a tally of 15 points.

1982
Mark Ella's Wallabies opened their tour of New Zealand with a 16-15 defeat of Taranaki. The captain shows his side the way, scoring two tries and dropping a goal. The tour was Ella's first as captain and it was also the first time he linked up with a young David Campese, a partnership which would reap great reward for Australia.
