Schalk Burger has been ruled out of South Africa's first Test against Italy in Witbank on Saturday with an ankle sprain.

The Stormers flanker picked up the injury in last weekend's superb 42-17 victory over France at Newlands and has been undergoing treatment all week.

He had been slated to start the game alongside Bulls No.8 Pierre Spies and flanker Dewald Potgieter, but has been replaced in the line-up by his Stormers team-mate Francois Louw. Louw has started the Springboks' last two Tests and scored his first international try last weekend.

"I really feel for Schalk - I know how much he cherishes playing in the Bok jersey - but now that I've experienced it myself, I'm really excited about getting another opportunity," he said. "I'm in game mode, as I've been on stand-by this whole week, knowing that Schalk might not be ready to play."
