South Africa boss Peter De Villiers has lost out on the services of Western Province defence coach Jacques Nienaber after an attempt to cure his side's defensive ills.

The Springbok coach engaged Nienaber after watching his side slip to a trilogy of damaging Tri-Nations defeats against the All Blacks and Wallabies, shipping 10 tries.

Both Western Province and the Stormers have shown a steely defensive edge in this season's Super 14 and Currie Cup, but De Villiers will not benefit from inside knowledge after the union declined to release Nienaber.

"Jacques met with Peter de Villiers to explore whether there is a way for him to help the Boks in the future. He then reported back to us," Western Province managing director Rob Wagner told Sport24. "We are at a crucial stage of the Currie Cup and it will unfortunately infringe on his duties here. We therefore can't see our way clear to releasing him."

De Villiers is currently in camp with his Springbok side as they prepare for a must-win game against a dominant All Blacks side at National Stadium in Soweto on August 21.

Meanwhile, the South African Rugby Union (SARU) has confirmed that Port Elizabeth's Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium will host New Zealand for a Tri-Nations Test in 2011, the first time in 41 years that the All Blacks have played in the city.

"There is a hunger in the region for top flight rugby," SARU president Oregan Hoskins said. "Port Elizabeth now has a top flight venue in the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium and SARU has a long-standing commitment to assist in bringing top flight-rugby back to the region. This is a tangible proof of our commitment."
