Heinrich Brussow's long-awaited return from injury has been delayed until after the Springboks' November tour after it emerged that the flanker requires further surgery.

The Cheetahs fetcher has been out of action since March after suffering a serious knee injury in their Super 14 victory over the Highlanders in Bloemfontein.

He ruptured his Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL), tore both the lateral and medial meniscus and tore the Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL) and medial capsule and now requires follow-up surgery to ensure his availability for the Super 15 and Rugby World Cup in 2011.

"Surgery on the major structures of the knee was successful but Springbok and Cheetahs medical staff have agreed that a follow-up operation is required to guarantee Brüssow's long-term recovery, and to prevent further risk to damaging the successfully reconstructed cruciate ligament," a statement read.

Brussow, 24, nailed down a place in the Springbok back-row with some eye-catching displays against the British & Irish Lions in 2009, later playing a major role in their march to Tri-Nations glory. To date he has collected 13 Test caps, his last coming against Ireland in November.
