Bulls prop Bees Roux has been charged with murder after appearing in court in Pretoria in connection with the death of a police officer.

Roux stands accused of killing sergeant Ntshimane Mogale. The court heard that Roux had been pulled over by Mogale in the early hours of August 27 on suspicion of drink driving.

An altercation followed as Mogale was driving the player home which resulted in the police officer's death. Roux's lawyer said that his client will plead not guilty, claiming that he was acting in self-defence. He was granted R100,000 bail and will remain in detention until he makes that payment.
