Springbok prop Gurthro Steenkamp has been ruled out of next month's tour of Europe after breaking his arm in the Blue Bulls' Currie Cup victory over Western Province on Saturday.

Unlike many of his international team-mates, who have been rested as part of a conditioning programme at the moment, Steenkamp was still playing for the Bulls as he does not have a Springbok contract.

"He broke one of the two pipes in his arm and we are waiting for news on the other one. I suspect it is broken as well," said team doctor Org Strauss.

Steenkamp, who won the last of his 31 Test caps against Australia last month, will also miss the culmination of this year's Currie Cup with the Blue Bulls in the hunt for the final four.

South Africa kick off their tour against Ireland in the Aviva Stadium on November 6 before tackling Wales, Scotland and England.
