Jaque Fourie has been ruled out of South Africa's November Grand Slam tour attempt after undergoing surgery on a foot injury.

The Western Province centre picked up the problem in last weekend's Currie Cup win over the Sharks in Cape Town, meaning that he will miss their semi-final against Free State on Saturday as well as the Springboks' four-Test northern hemisphere tour.

The 62-times-capped midfielder will be out of action for eight weeks, with the Springboks beginning their hunt for a clean sweep of the Home Unions against Ireland at the Aviva Stadium on November 6.

"Where we will miss Jaque is on defence," Western Province boss Allister Coetzee told Supersport. "He is our defensive organiser, our communicator, and in that sense we have work to do before Saturday's match against the Cheetahs. At the same time though, we played without Jaque for most of the competition, so it's not a complete disaster for us.

"I feel sorry for Jaque. Last week's game was his first for WP and he was really looking forward to trying to help us win the Currie Cup. Now he sits with this injury."
