Lions flanker Michael Rhodes has been banned for six weeks for a dangerous tackle on Highlanders winger Siale Piutau during the Super Rugby match in Dunedin on Saturday.

Rhodes appeared before a disciplinary hearing on Tuesday and judicial officer Nick Davidson ruled that his tackle duing the Lions 26-22 victory put Piutau "at serious risk of injury." The two players clashed in the 59th minute of the match with Rhodes grabbing Piutau in a headlock at a ruck.

Piutau was also cited after he retaliated by throwing two punches at Rhodes' head, but he escaped punishment with Davidson saying his reaction was that of someone who had been "seriously endangered."

Rhodes' ban rules him out of the Lions' remaining matches against the Hurricanes and the Sharks.
