The Springboks have released 23 players from their camp and made them available for Currie Cup selection.

The group - which includes 15 players who took part in the away legs of the 2011 Tri-Nations - will hope to prove to coach Peter de Villiers that they are worthy of a spot in the final 30-man squad for the World Cup in South Africa's domestic tournament.

And in addition to the 15 players who had a chance to impress while on the field for the Boks in their defeats to Australia and New Zealand - eight players who failed to accrue any match time have also been released.

"Eight of this group have not played any rugby since the end of the Super Rugby competition and have been on rehabilitation programmes, with their European clubs or with the Springbok squad," de Villiers said.

"Our medical team is continuing assessments on the remainder of the players who were unavailable for selection for the away leg. There are still injury concerns around a number of them."

The aforementioned eight players are: BJ Botha, Heinrich Brüssow, Elton Jantjies, Zane Kirchner, Francois Louw, Johann Muller, Adriaan Strauss and Coenie Oosthuizen. Despite their exclusion - along with the 15 others - De Villiers was keen to stress they will all remain in World Cup contention.

Released players: Bjorn Basson, BJ Botha , Heinrich Brüssow, Adrian Jacobs, Elton Jantjies, Zane Kirchner, Patrick Lambie, Francois Louw, Charl McLeod, Lwazi Mvovo, Odwa Ndungane, Wynand Olivier, Dean Greyling, Alistair Hargreaves, Ryan Kankowski, Werner Kruger, Ashley Johnson, Johann Muller, Coenie Oosthuizen, Chiliboy Ralepelle, Deon Stegmann, Adriaan Strauss, Flip van der Merwe.
