South Africa flanker Deon Stegmann has been ruled out for a month with a fractured cheekbone.

The openside was injured in the Blue Bulls' 16-12 Currie Cup victory over the Pumas on Friday night, perhaps ending his hopes of making the Springbok squad for the Rugby World Cup.

Stegmann played the opening two Tests of the Tri-Nations but was released for domestic duty, along with 23 others, prior to South Africa's meeting with Australia on Saturday.

The 25-year-old will undergo surgery on Monday, with Bulls doctor Org Strauss estimating a four-week recovery period.
