Newcastle Falcons have boosted their forward pack with the signing of Stormers and Western Province second-row Adriaan Fondse.

The 28-year-old, who has made more than 30 appearances for the Stormers in Super Rugby, is set to arrive in England and link up with his new team-mates on Monday. Fondse is a former South Africa under-21 international and has a wealth of Super Rugby and Currie Cup experience with the Bulls, Blue Bulls and Western Province as well as the Stormers.

"I am really looking forward to the challenge of playing for the Falcons," said Fondse, who is 6ft 5in tall and more than 18 stone. "The Falcons are an ambitious club that wants to go places and I am really pleased to have the opportunity to move to Newcastle.

"I definitely want to be involved in something big at the club."

Fondse joins a host of South African recruit at Kingston Park, including Corne Uys who played with the lock at Western Province. "Adriaan is a big physical man and he is a great signing for the club," said the Falcons centre. "He is a good ball carrier who works really hard for the team and as a person he is a nice guy - you could say he is a gentle giant."
