Utility back Jacques-Louis Potgieter has signed for Bayonne until the end of the season, according to reports.

Midi-Olympique claims the 27-year-old has agreed a deal, pending a medical. Super Rugby side the Sharks are said to have agreed to his release earlier in the week, though they are yet to officially confirm this.

The utility back - who is equally adept at fly-half and centre - started his rugby career with the Bulls in 2007 before moving to the Cheetahs a year later. He moved back to the Bulls in 2010 and then signed for the Sharks in 2011.

But Potgieter struggled for a place in the side in last season's Super Rugby with the likes of Pat Lambie, Frederic Michalak and Meyer Bosman higher in the pecking order. However, Potgieter - when given the chance - still managed to accrue 201 points for the Sharks last term.

Bayonne are currently struggling in the Top 14 sitting in 12th but possess an embarrassment of riches in the backs with Joe Rokocoko, Mike Phillips and Cedric Heymans all featuring for the French side. They are still on course for a spot in the Amlin Challenge Cup quarter-finals after beating Bordeaux on Thursday evening 12-6.
