Patrick Lambie scored 23 points as the Natal Sharks beat defending champions Western Province 33-19 in the Currie Cup final at a packed Newlands.

Lambie kicked five penalties, two drop-goals and a conversion to add to two tries from scrumhalf Charl McLeod to give the Sharks their first national title since 2010 and inflict the first defeat of the season on Province.

The Sharks led from the early stages, thanks in part to McLeod's first try which saw him steal the ball inside his own half and run half the length of the field before scoring.

Ahead only 19-13 at the break, the Sharks took a hold on the game when McLeod scored his second try in the 57th minute to put them 11 points clear.

Lambie, who missed three first-half kicks, sealed the victory with a penalty in the final minute, silencing the largely partisan crowd.
