Victor Matfield considered joining the Brumbies in 2012 after his Rugby World Cup-winning Springboks coach, Jake White, made him an "enticing" offer to play again before joining the franchise's coaching ranks.

''Jake wanted me to come play and then get involved in the coaching as well,'' Matfield told Fairfax Media ahead of the Bulls' Super Rugby match against the Brumbies in Pretoria.

''I did have a good, hard look at it and thought about it. It was something that I almost took up, but with my family it was just easier in Pretoria. It would have been a good opportunity and it was enticing, but I'm glad I am back playing with the Bulls.''

Matfield came out of a two-year retirement to play for the Bulls again this year, after being on the franchise's coaching roster, and he was recently named in the Springboks squad to play Wales and Scotland in June.
