South Africa appear unlikely to have lock Eben Etzebeth available for the June Tests against Wales and Scotland.

Etzebeth is still recovering from an ankle injury sustained last November against France. He underwent surgery soon after and was told he would need up to six months to recover. He faces at least another three weeks of treatment before he can resume training.

"The situation is a major setback as he's been one of our best players in the last two seasons," said South Africa coach Heyneke Meyer. "We're continually monitoring his injury, because he really wants to play for the Springboks next month.

"However, he is still young and has a highly promising career ahead and his welfare is the most important to us."
