Junior Springboks captain Handre Pollard has been named Junior Player of the Year.

The fly-half, who suffered heartbreak in the Junior World Championship final on Friday, beat three other players to take the International Rugby Board honour.

England wing Nathan Earle, Ireland centre Garry Ringrose and New Zealand wing Tevita Li were the other names in the frame for award, won last year by Wales fly-half Sam Davies.

Pollard received the award after South Africa's Junior World Championship loss to defending champions England. The Springbok captain missed out on lifting the trophy by one point as England won 21-20 in a thrilling match at Eden Park in Auckland.

Pollard missed two drop goal attempts, the second of which would have put South Africa ahead in the dying minutes of the match, but he has been in imperious form during the tournament. He became the leading points scorer in Junior World Championship history during South Africa's semi-final victory over New Zealand.
