Ospreys coach Steve Tandy said the reaction to new South African signing De Kock Steenkamp's comments that he wants to play for Wales have been "over the top".

Steencamp will be eligible for Wales after serving a three-year residency and when asked said he would be delighted to have a chance to play for the side. A number of former players spoke out against the way that a foreign player could so easily qualify for another country.

Steencamp falls into a category of time servers - players who move with a view to being eligible for international duty after serving their three-year residency period.

Referring to the coverage of Steencamp's comments, Tandy said: "I think it's a little bit over the top, if I'm honest, especially when you've got so many other time-servers in and around the place I think he said something in goodwill. I think it's been a little bit blown out of proportion.

"First and foremost, he's got a job to do for us when he comes in. He's got to get into our team."
