Sharks flanker Jean Deysel has been hit with a seven-week ban for kneeing Crusaders flanker Matt Todd in their Round 8 clash in Durban.

Deysel, 30, earned the suspension after he was sent off in the first half of the Crusaders' 52-10 thumping of the home side in Durban at the weekend.

Deysel was also sent off when the teams met in Christchurch last year, for a stomp to the face of Crusaders flanker Jordan Taufua. He received a three-match ban following that incident and that contributed to his hefty sentence this time round, says SANZAR judicial officer Nicholas Davidson QC.

Deysel admitted the foul play charge, and Davidson said the video evidence clearly showed Deysel jumped up then brought his right knee down on the side of Todd's head while he lay on the ground.

"While Todd was fortunately not injured, the act carried real potential for injury and Todd was in a vulnerable position," he said.

Deysel won't be able to play until the end of May.
