Five black Springboks players have approached the Congress of South African Trade Unions requesting better representation in Test squads, South African media has reported.

Western Cape COSATU chairperson Motlatsi Tsubane told South Africa's News24 organisation that two white Springboks had also "put their weight behind the matter" as they felt "not enough had been done to transform the team".

Transformation remains a key issue in South African rugby, with plans announced earlier in the year calling for seven non-white players in each 23-man Springboks match squads in the run-up to the 2015 Rugby World Cup. At least two of the none-white players had to be black Africans, under the plans announced, Heyneke Meyer's squads this season have not fulfilled that "quota". Just three players of colour started against the All Blacks recently, with two on the bench, while two started with three on the bench against the Pumas on Saturday.

"Unfortunately for obvious reasons we are not in a position to give names because, at the end of the day, we still have to sit down and engage with them so they can give a clear overview of what is happening," Tsubane said.

Tsubane said the players were afraid to speak out for fear of being victimised.
