Allister Coetzee has been confirmed as South Africa's new head coach on a contract through to the 2019 Rugby World Cup.

Coetzee replaces Heyneke Meyer who left the post in the wake of their third-place finish at the last World Cup. Coetzee, who coached the Stormers from 2010 to 2015, joins South Africa after a stint in Japan at Kobelco Steelers.

Coetzee's record with the Stormers saw them top the South African conference in 2011, 2012 and 2015 and finish overall runners-up in 2010 when they lost to the Bulls in the final. With the Western Province - the team he guided from 2008 to 2015 - he won the 2012 and 2014 Currie Cups.

He has previous experience of working with the national side having acted as Jake White's backs coach from 2004 to 2007 and helped steer them to their World Cup triumph in France.

His first task will be to prepare the Springboks for their three-Test series at home against Ireland in June before then turning attention to the Rugby Championship.
