Springbok fly half Jannie de Beer has asked to sit out Thursday's 3rd place play off game so that Henry Honiball can start in what will be his last game for the Springboks.
De Beer has played in all five of the South African's matches in the competition, with de beer only making his first appearance late on in Saturday's semi-final defeat as a replacement for centre Pieter Muller.
Honiball has signed to play for English club Bristol and as the South African selectors do not pick overseas-based players. He is set to announce his retirement after Thursday's match.
Thursday's game still holds much importance for the two sides as the winner will qualify automatically for the next World Cup competition in 2003, while the losers will have to endure a qualifying competition.
Nick Mallett will have to field a much changed side for the match, with Bobby Skinstad and wings Deon Kayser and Pieter Rossouw all be ruled out through injury.
Skinstad's troublesome knee has flared up again, while Kayser has a broken jaw and Rossouw has a strained calf muscle.
Their places in the Springbok team are likely to be taken by Andre Vos, Breyton Paulse and Stefan Terblanche. The Springbok team will be announced on Tuesday.
