Confusion over Prinsloo
September 20, 2000

The Golden Lions Rugby Union executive will meet on Wednesday to try and settle the ongoing conflict over the alleged resignation of chief executive Johan Prinsloo.

Prinsloo's future as a trustee of the union's sports trust seemed unclear on Tuesday, in the light of the conflicting reports over his alleged resignation from the trust.

In a statement on Tuesday night, the trust claimed that Prinsloo had resigned. GLRU spokesperson Annemarie Mains, however, said Prinsloo, who refused to speak to the media, denied resigning.

According to the trust's statement, Louis Luyt, chairperson of both Ellis Park Stadium (Pty) Ltd and the Golden Lions Rugby Sports Trust, had withdrawn legal action against Prinsloo as a result of his alleged resignation.

On September 4, Luyt applied to the High Court to have Prinsloo removed as a director of the Ellis Park Stadium (Pty) Ltd and as a trustee of the GLRU Sport Trust.

The trust's statement on Tuesday followed a meeting of the trustees earlier in the day, where GLRU deputy president Johan Gouws also stepped down as a member of the trust. The reasons for Gouws' decision were not stated.

Luyt's spokesperson, Jan Bosman, said the trust decided on Tuesday to accept a settlement struck between the trustees and Luyt at a meeting last Monday.

According to the arrangement, Prinsloo would resign and Luyt would withdraw legal proceedings. Bosman said Prinsloo later denied the agreement, but the trustees decided on Tuesday that the settlement was valid.

"In terms of the agreement reached between the trustees and Dr Luyt, the legal proceedings against Mr Prinsloo were withdrawn and in terms of the provisions of the trust deed, all legal costs are payable by the trust," the statement by the trust said.

In Luyt's court application against Prinsloo, he accused the GLRU chief executive and Lions coach Laurie Mains of being involved in a conspiracy to undermine both the stadium and the trust. He delivered an ultimatum to Prinsloo to quit or face High Court action
