Training accident puts Woods' return back

Niall Woods' return to action hit a set back this week when he sustained a calf strain while holding a tackle bag for the bullocking Garrick Morgan.

The big Aussie second row has started the new Zurich Premiership campaign on rampaging form is clearly something of a handful in training as well as for the opposition in games.

The wing, who has won eight caps for Ireland, injured knee ligaments playing against England last year in a World Cup warm-up while a London Irish player. He had been targeting a return at the start of October but that has now been put back a few weeks.

He was brought in to the Quins side as a full-back and that position is proving problematic, particularly after Mark Mapletoft dislocated a knee against Bristol last weekend.

He sees a specialist tomorrow, but the signs are not encouraging. Mike Scott, Quins team manager, said the knee had deteriorated during the week and Ligament damage has been diagnosed.

"Maybe he is going to need an operation on the knee, he could be out for some time, we will see tomorrow. The dislocation seems to be a bit of a red herring, as the week has gone on the knee has got slacker," he said.

The injured knee is not the one that Mapletoft has had problems with in the past.

For Saturday's game against Gloucester Ryan O'Neill will continue to deputise at full-back giving Brendon Daniel the chance to cement a place on the wing.

And good news this week is that back-up, in the form of Jamie Williams, will be on the bench. The full-back played his first game this week for over a year after picking up an ankle injury playing for England in the Paris Sevens.

The only other change to the team which won on Saturday is Alex Codling who comes in at lock in place of Adam Jones, who drops to the bench.

David Wilson starts his second game for his new club with Steve White-Cooper and Rory Jenkins in the back row which should be boosted by the Newcastle game with the return from injury of both Pat Sanderson and Roy Winters.

Gloucester captain Ian Jones this week announced he was relinquishing the captaincy after just six games to concentrate on his game and helping the injury-hit West Country to recover from an awful start to the season.

Former captain Kingsley Jones will be handed back the role with a view to making it a permanent move.

England prop Phil Vickery is set to make his first appearance of the season while Joe Ewens is ruled out with a groin injury.
