Viljoen needs more time

Newly elected Springbok coach Harry Viljoen has given himself until after the 2001 Tri-Nations competition to come up with a team he can call his own.

Viljoen and his squad leave for Buenos Aries on Tuesday - the first tour under his command - where they will have a week to prepare themselves for a potentially volatile match against Argentina A at Tucaman.

"I think by the end of the next Super 12, or actually the Tri-Nations, I will be able to call on players who I think can do the job," he told a newspaper.

The coach has included most of predecessor Nick Mallett's team in his touring squad of 40, confirming the need for continuity and experience on such a difficult tour. But he warned that it would not necessarily guarantee the current players an automatic spot.

"I will be traveling with an open mind. I have no idea of what the Test team would look like, but a lot can change," he said.
