Tough test for Bok hookers
November 2, 2000

The Springboks are expecting a tough tour opener against Argentina "A" in Tucaman next Wednesday. They are particularly wary of the Argentinians feared bajada scrumming technique, while refereeing interpretations is another concern.

Bok coach Harry Viljoen told a newspaper: "We know that Scott Young (of Australia) will be in charge of the Test against the Pumas in Buenos Aires next Sunday, but in Tucaman we'll have a local referee blowing. The Argentinians' powerful scrumming and forward play will ensure a tough match

"With the selection of the Bok hookers, I decided against picking the experienced, battle-hardened No 2s and instead opted for younger, exciting and more mobile hookers (pictured - Delarey du Preez). That's why I'm concerned about our first game against the Pumas' A side."

Bok captain André Vos said: "We saw the Pumas in action in the second Test against the Wallabies in Brisbane. The Puma forwards were impressive. The Wallabies won 32-25 and the Pumas were very unlucky not to have won.

"But apart from their forwards, they also have dangerous backs and when they play the ball wide, they'll have to be taken down quickly."

Viljoen and his management team haven't decided on the make-up of their "dirt-trackers" squad or on the captain.

Viljoen said: "Those who are chosen for the midweek team will not be excluded from selection for the Test team against the Pumas. At this stage there are places up for grabs. We'll definitely experiment a bit with various combinations in Tucuman.

"We haven't given any thought yet as to who will captain the midweek team. At the moment tour captain Andre Vos is the only captain." Chester Williams seems a prime candidate to fulfil this duty.

Luckily, it seems the Currie Cup final hasn't left too many scars. Western Province prop Toks van der Linde (pictured) is shaking off a neck injury while Natal Sharks flank Warren Brosnihan (infected knee) is on the mend.

Lions centre Japie Mulder has been declared fit, but can only be considered for selection for the third tour match against Ireland A.
