Montgomery set for fly-half debut

Percy Montgomery seems set to make his debut at flyhalf for the Springboks against Argentina next Sunday.

Commenting on Montgomery, Bok coach Harry Viljoen said in Buenos Aires on Thursday: "If I want to do it, I must do it now. There is no reason for me to delay it.

"I'm strongly considering taking this courageous step to pick Montgomery at flyhalf against the Pumas. I firmly believe he is the man for the job."

What will make picking Montgomery at flyhalf less of a risk is the fact that his expected opponent, Gonzalo Quesada, is more renowned for his kicking ability than his attacking or defensive capabilities.

Viljoen said: "If Quesada plays, it will be easier to make the decision. But even if it wasn't the case, I would still consider it. If we were playing England first, I probably wouldn't have used him at flyhalf now."

The Bok coach has been happy with how Montgomery has performed at practice this week. "Decision-making and good communication are very important qualities for a good flyhalf. I believe Monty can do it. I've been watching him closely at practice and his communication is excellent."

Viljoen has indicated that he will be opting for experience in the Test against Argentina. "There should be only one change among the tight five," he said.

There have been whispers that Viljoen may be considering picking Natal hooker John Smit ahead of Western Province's Charl Marais. Smit has had to play second fiddle to Rossouw at the Sharks and it will be a surprise if the consistent Marais gets the axe.
