Otto hoping for a miracle
November 3, 2000

While Krynauw Otto has already started devoting himself to a new career, Ruben Kruger is still hoping his rugby career hasn't come to an end.

Neither player can risk taking another blow to the head again and especially Otto, who had a few good years left in in him, has been hit hard by the course their lives has taken.

Otto, who had his Tri-Nations ended when he had to have blood drained from his brain, told a newspaper: "I'm hoping for a miracle. I based my whole life on rugby and now it's all fallen flat. I doesn't seem like I'll ever play again - if I follow doctor's orders.

"I have had to relax at home, following doctor's orders. I had to lie still for about a week after the last injury. For the next three months I can't do anything particularly physical. I can't even lift anything."

To keep himself busy and boost his bank balance, Otto has become involved in developing property.

Kruger, who underwent a biopsy last week on his head tumour, has seemingly found it hard to accept that it might all be over, saying: "I haven't decided to stop playing rugby yet. I will rest for several months.

"The doctors are concerned that a bump on the head would be very bad. I'm very positive and so is my wife. We've discussed the tumour and now we're not going to talk about it again. I'll overcome this thing and that's that."
