Viljoen satisfied with win
November 9, 2000

Springbok coach Harry Viljoen proclaimed himself happy with the midweek team's 32-21 win over an experienced and tough Argentina A outfit and cautioned those supporters who expect miracles too soon.

Viljoen said on Wednesday night: "The guys won and that's the most important. It was important for the young guys who played there first game for their country tonight. I think it's important that the foundation was laid with a victory."

He did add, however, that he is not entirely happy with the performance put up by the second-stringers. "We know we can play much better, but the vital thing was to go back with a win.

"I think Lawrence Sephaka played very well and he made a huge difference to our scrummaging when he came on. Victor Matfield also made a difference. You could see the younger guys were a bit
nervous.

"For a lot of them it was a big step up and their options weren't really spot on, but it will come as the tour progresses."

The Boks made numerous handling errors in the wet weather and Viljoen admitted that aspect of the game wasn't impressive at all.

"They said the ball was uncontrollable. Dan van Zyl said he couldn't even pick the ball up and we couldn't play our game. We should, however, learn to adapt to the circumstances."

New Bok lock Quinton Davids was substituted at halftime, but Viljoen said there was no sinister reason behind that decision. "We made a change there because there was a need to contest their ball and stop their driving play."

The Boks had a torrid time in the scrums and they were taken part in that phase of the game. But Viljoen was adamant that they will be up to the Puma challenge in the scrums in Sunday's Test.

Viljoen believes it's just a matter of technique. "We must work on our technique, it's basically about our technique. Tonight our problems started at the scrums, but I think it's about the decision-making and the option-taking of our young players.

"Maybe we should have followed another pattern to get into their territory and that's where we need to show an improvement. But at the end of the day the most important thing is that we had a win. I'm confident that we can only improve from here."
