Viljoen delays naming team
November 10, 2000

Injury concerns about tighthead prop Willie Meyer forced Springbok coach Harry Viljoen on Friday to announce a 22-man squad for Sunday's one-off Test against Argentina at River Plate Stadium.

The 33-year-old Meyer had a recurrence of an old knee injury during training and missed Wednesday's training session.

Viljoen said: "We want to give Willie more chance to recover. We think he will be ready. He is a specialist tighthead and we really want him to play."

Viljoen said that will not publicly name his starting line-up until shortly before kick-off.

"We have the concerns about Willie and maybe just to keep our team away from them for as long as possible too," were the reasons Viljoen gave for the delay in naming his team.

"This is our first Test and we have complications in the front row. We don't want them to focus on that. This is just for this Test.

"Our major problem is at tighthead. With Cobus Visage injured, it's a difficult situation.

"And now Willie is injured too. But we're doing another scrummaging session today (Friday)."

Vijoen is considering moving Robbie Kempson to tighthead if Meyer doesn't meet his fitness deadline. But bringing versatile front-rower John Smit (selected in the tour party as a hooker) into the fray is also at the back of his mind.

"Robbie is not a specialist tighthead and John Smit is an up and coming youngster who has played most of his rugby at prop. But scrummaging is a concern, especially against the Pumas."

Viljoen did confirm that Chester Williams and Breyton Paulse will be the wings, with Grant Esterhuizen and Robbie Fleck in midfield.

Fleck made a reasonable success of his two outings at inside centre in the home Vodacom
Tri-Nations Tests against New Zealand and Australia and with Japie Mulder not considered due to injury, the Western Province star gets the nod again.

"I'm not 100 per cent sure where Fleckie's best position is," Viljoen admitted. "Now we have the opportunity to try him there (at inside centre).

"Japie will probably be available for the
next Test as well, but we will have a look at all our options."

The halfback pairing will be Joost van der Westhuizen - back in the starting
line-up after being cold-shouldered by Viljoen's predecessor Nick Mallett - and Percy Montgomery.

The latter, a veteran of 40 Tests, will make his debut as pivot, after starting his international career at centre and subsequently enjoying success at fullback.

With specialist goalkicker Braam van Straaten on the substitute's bench, Montgomery will also take the responsibility of kicking for poles.

Viljoen is not overly concerned about the fact that he's taking the field without a specialist
in a very important department of the game.

"No, I'm not too worried about that. I do believe Percy is a good goalkicker. These last two days he has practised hard and he's capable of kicking very well.

"Braam, on his day, is probably the best kicker in the world and we have him on the bench."

Amongst the forwards, Andre Venter is shifted back to his favourite flank position after locking the scrum with Mark Andrews in the Boks' last few Tests.

It means Albert van den Berg joins his provincial
teammate Andrews in the second row.

Springbok squad:

Backs: Thinus Delport, Chester Williams, Breyton Paulse, Grant Esterhuizen, Braam van Straaten, Pieter Rossouw, Robbie Fleck, Percy Montgomery, Dan van Zyl, Joost van der Westhuizen.

Forwards: Andre Vos (capt), Andre Venter, AJ Venter, Corne Krige, Mark Andrews, Albert van den Berg, Hottie Louw, Willie Meyer, Robbie Kempson, John Smit, Ollie le Roux, Charl Marais.
