Boks to vary strategy
November 14, 2000

While Harry Viljoen caught the Argentinians off-guard with the Springboks non-kicking game plan in the first half on Sunday, it's not the only strategy he will be employing on their end-of-season tour.

Viljoen, who is seeking to revolutionise the way the game is played, has copped a lot of flak because of the Boks' refusal to kick in certain pressure situations. But what people are forgetting is that it's all part of a learning curve.

Viljoen said: "We'll have a different strategy for each match." He already said before they departed for Argentina that "I want them to learn to play with the ball and to think with the ball in hand".

One can be certain that Viljoen's Boks will be anything but predictable in the feature matches against Ireland, Wales, England and the Barbarians.

Flank Andre Venter said of their exciting new game plan. "There are so many more options available. We are making use of short and long passes and are varying the angles of attack. I enjoyed it (the game against Argentina)."

Former Bok great Morne du Plessis said that it's clear that this time round there is not just mere talk of a new game plan.

"It's refreshing, although it did have my heart beating faster at times. But isn't that what rugby is all about and the reason why we like the game so much," he said.

"I was impressed by the team's discipline to stick to the resolution not to kick the ball. In other circumstances they will probably adapt it."

Commenting on the Boks' decision not to kick the ball in the first half, Viljoen said: "The manner in which they applied themselves was astonishing. And the confidence they displayed in the first half was surprising, especially because their options were restricted."
