The most outstanding player in this weekend's opening round of the World Sevens Series will become R10,000 richer thanks to a new sponsorship deal with South African Breweries.

The opening leg of the 2000/2001 IRB Sevens World Series gets underway in Durban on Saturday. Sixteen teams, including defending champions Fiji, current Series title holders New Zealand, Australia, Samoa, England, Wales, Argentina and Canada will take part.

"Sevens rugby is a fantastic advertisement for the running and skills aspects of the sport and we felt we could make a meaningful contribution to this by introducing this incentive," said the Head of Sports Sponsorship at SAB, Godfrey Morley.

"We expect that Durban event, and indeed the World Series, will grow in popularity and stature in years to come and it is important for us to become involved at this level. We will also be able to grow our involvement alongside the growth of the event itself".

Meanwhile it has been confirmed that Spur Steak Ranches, sponsors of the Spur Schools Sevens, will sponsor a coaching clinic by the Springbok Sevens teams to be held at the ABSA Stadium on Thursday afternoon.

"Spur's focus is on the youth and they are eager to identify new opportunities of involvement in Sevens," said SARFU GM: Marketing, Gary Grant. " The future of the seven-man game lies with schools players. If we are able to establish a strong foundation at that level, our country will produce countless sevens players in the future. It is fantastic that SAB and Spur have committed to this event," Grant said.
