Referee link available for fans
November 16, 2000

Fans at all three of England's autumn Tests will be able get closer to the action thanks to a radio link to the referee.

South African referee Andre Watson will be wired for sound this weekend. Fans who buy a radio receiver will be able to hear everything he says.

Ref! Link, a system first experimented with in the English Premiership last season, has been given approval for England's clash with world champions Australia on Saturday and for matches against Argentina and South Africa.

It has been pioneered by Bath-based company Crescent Marketing and its managing director Peter Downey.

"Ref! Link has added to the enjoyment and understanding of the game by spectators," said Rugby Football Union referees' chief Nick Bunting.

"But we also see this as a benefit to the sport at large, as it explains the decisions of the referee and demonstrates how an official manages the game, rather than acting only as a policeman."

The radio devices will be on sale for £5 at outlets in and around Twickenham.
