Smit only Bok concern

Springbok coach Harry Viljoen will have a full squad to choose from when he names his Test team to take on Ireland on Friday.

Hooker John Smit is battling with flu but should be fit to take his place on Sunday, while centre Grant Esterhuizen (knee) has recovered from the bruising that forced him to leave the field against Argentina.

Viljoen told a website: "Grant is fit and ready and he will definitely be part of the starting lineup against Ireland."

According to Viljoen, the Boks will be trying to run "about 80 percent" as much as they did against the Pumas.

"We have to run at them and test their defence. That is what the new game is about. There will be minor adjustments, but the basic approach will be the same.

"I never said we were going to change our game plan completely in this match. The point of last week was to introduce a new mindset, and to a large extent we achieved that objective. Now that we have done that, we have to carry elements of that on into our next match.

"Although we will kick more than last week, we will still follow the basics of the platform that we laid in Buenos Aires last week."

Viljoen is clearly not toying with the idea of selecting Braam van Straaten ahead of Esterhuizen for his goalkicking and defensive abilities.

"Losing Grant (against Argentina) meant that we lost several of our options in taking the ball up," said Viljoen.

Likely Springbok team: Thinus Delport, Breyton Paulse, Grant Esterhuizen, Robbie Fleck, Chester Williams, Percy Montgomery, Joost van der Westhuizen, Andre Vos (capt), Andre Venter, Corne Krige, Albert van den Berg, Mark Andrews, Willie Meyer, John Smit, Robbie Kempson. Substitutes: Pieter Rossouw, Braam van Straaten, Dan van Zyl, AJ Venter, Hottie Louw, Ollie le Roux, Charl Marais.
