Boe to assist with coaching of the Highlanders

For Super 12 2001, Otago Highlanders' coach Peter Sloane will be assisted by John Boe, it has been announced today.

This is an interesting appointment, because Boe has struggled in recent seasons to advance his New Zealand coaching career in the way that he wanted and in the way that many observers felt he deserved.

Despite coaching Waikato between 1995-98, which included an NPC title and the winning of the Ranfurly Shield from Auckland, coaching the New Zealand under 19 side to a world championship victory in Wales and coaching Manu Samoa to an Epson Cup title in 2000, Boe has seemed not to enjoy the full confidence of some within the NZRFU.

When Ross Cooper resigned as Chiefs' coach two months ago, Boe was in competition with a number of other candidates to step up for the Waikato-based franchise in 2001. But John Mitchell's subsequent appointment , and his retention of assistant coach Kevin Greene, suggested that Boe may have to look overseas to advance his career.

His appointment to assist with the Highlanders, who were a considerable disappointment in 2000, indicates that Boe still has a future in New Zealand.
