Quinnell sizes up huge Springbok challenge
November 24, 2000

New Wales captain Scott Quinnell insists it will take a herculean effort for his side to topple South Africa at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium on Sunday.

Quinnell has wasted no time mapping out the size of the challenge facing Wales
following his appointment as successor to the injured Mark Taylor.

``We will have to play very well to get a result,'' he warned.``South Africa have some tremendous players and plenty of experience throughout their side.
We've started to come together with our wins over Samoa and the USA over the
past two weeks but this is a step up. The Springboks are among the top few sides in world rugby.''

Coach Graham Henry named Quinnell as skipper in the wake of Taylor being ruled out by knee trouble that could sideline him for up to three months.

Wales drafted Peter Rogers into their squad earlier in the week with the aim
of targeting the South African scrum.
Rogers proved himself one of the strongest scrummagers on the Test scene last year with a series of powerful performances as Henry's side put together a 10-game winning run.

He has played just four times this season, having being ruled out of the
Heineken Cup because of an eligibility row, but is now looking to re-establish
himself.

The former London Irish player, who appeared in Wales' 1999 win over the
Springboks, said: ``I've figured against South Africa before and beaten them. It would be brilliant to achieve another victory.''

Rogers is back on the scene with a glowing compliment from the Wales
hierarchy.Team manager David Pickering said: ``Peter has shown in the past he's an outstanding player. You don't lose your ability in a short space of time and we've every confidence he can still do a job.''
