Viljoen considers Du Toit
November 24, 2000

Gaffie du Toit could be a surprise inclusion in the Springbok side for Sunday's Test against Wales, but his participation depends on whether the roof of the Millennium Stadium will be closed or open.

Springbok coach Harry Viljoen on Thursday adopted a safety-first approach when he said his squad for Sunday's Test would only be announced on Saturday. "The reason for that is because they still haven't given us any indication on whether the roof will be closed or open. We are having a protocol meeting tomorrow at 3pm with the management of the stadium.

"We obviously would prefer a closed roof. The game is about entertainment and that's what we're working towards. We don't want to fall into the trap where we want to give people a kicking exhibition. In Gaffie, we probably have the best kicker in the world distance-wise, so it's been very difficult for us to make a decision. He kicked the ball 60, 70 metres last night (Wednesday), which was exceptional."

The coach added that if their request for a closed roof was denied, they would consider the possibility of including Du Toit and instruct him to use his boot more than judiciously.

"I cannot understand why you pay so much money to build a roof and you still consider keeping it open. To me it doesn't make sense. This game is all about entertainment. It's about winning too, but it's about the rugby you want to play."

It remains to be seen whether Viljoen will actually go as far as dropping in-form attacking trump card Thinus Delport at fullback or Percy Montgomery at flyhalf to accommodate the highly talented Du Toit. Viljoen is a disciple of continuity, not only in the way his teams play, but also selection-wise.

By 4pm on Thursday, the Springbok camp still haven't heard anything officially from the independent match commissioner regarding Japie Mulder. The Wales A team management on Wednesday night said Mulder should be cited for three incidents of illegal play involving their flyhalf Stephen Jones.

Viljoen said he just heard "they" want to cite Mulder. "I haven't seen the videos or anything, but apparently they are busy citing Japie." The coach added Mulder wasn't in the reckoning for selection for the Wales Test. "We are trying to be as stable as possible with regard to team selections and we will stick to our formula. We're trying to build the players' confidence."

Viljoen reckoned the fact that Mulder was out for quite a while with injury and didn't perform adequately on his return against Ireland A could have led to a bit of frustration on the player's part.

"I think Japie was very eager. He was quite frustrated and it was more his eagerness and enthusiasm that caused the problem. He is known as a physical player, but not as a dirty player. It will be a great pity if they do cite him, because we would have looked at him with an eye on the England match."
