Cardiff to remain roof-less for the Springboks
November 25, 2000

The Millennium Stadium roof will be left open for Wales' clash with South
Africa on Sunday.

The Welsh Rugby Union have confirmed that the match will be exposed to the
elements despite a request from the South African management that the roof is closed for the match.

And Wales coach Graham Henry has complained of too much "belly-aching" over the issue, not least from South Africans used to playing at altitude - conditions unfamiliar to their visitors.

Yet rain that has been forecast in South Wales over the weekend, and the roof was closed for each of the last two internationals against Samoa and the USA in the last fortnight.

On those occasions the official announcement was that both teams had agreed to adopt the indoor approach.

Henry has put forward the view that touring countries should adapt to the conditions of the different climates that they play in.

``When Wales or any other team go to South Africa they have to play at
altitude at 6,000ft. They play in temperatures of 30 degrees and on hard ground. You just have to get on with it,'' said Henry.``And when South Africa go to Wales they won't play in 30 degrees, or on hard ground, or at altitude. They will play in conditions of that country and that's what touring is all about. We don't want to produce South African conditions for the South Africans.''

South Africa had delayed naming their side until today to find out whether
they would be playing under a closed roof or not.It seems that the big- kicking Gaffie du Toit could make the starting line up at fly-half ahead of Percy Montgomery because of the open roof scenario.

Wales made the decision yesterday to go for Neil Jenkins at No 10 ahead of
Arwel Thomas purely because of experience.Henry said: ``Neil's played a lot of Test match rugby. He's got the highest goal-scoring record in the world. He's very confident, very organised in the team situation and he's up for the game.''

Jenkins needs just nine points to top a thousand in international rugby for
Wales and the British Isles. He is one of three new faces from the side that beat the US Eagles 42-11 last Saturday.

The Cardiff outside-half is joined by clubmates Gareth Thomas on the right wing and loosehead prop Peter Rogers.
