Harry wants Gaffie magic

Springbok coach Harry Viljoen is hoping Gaffie du Toit at fullback and Percy Montgomery at flyhalf can unlock the undeniable attacking potential of his team in Sunday's game against the Barbarians.

The Springboks take on the invitation side on Sunday in Cardiff in their tour finale.

Viljoen on Monday defended his decision not to include Du Toit in the side for the 25-17 loss to the English, saying he didn't want to rush the talented Sharks star back into Test action.

"Remember Gaffie is part of our process - I didn't want to put him in the Test side and put him under unnecessary pressure at this stage. There was the possibility that the same thing could have happened that happened in Dunedin. This Saturday is ideal for Gaffie, with not as much pressure as in a Test. He is part of a process and we are looking at him in the long-term," Viljoen explained.

Du Toit's blossoming Test career came to an abrupt end last year when Viljoen's predecessor Nick Mallett blamed him and halfback partner Dave von Hoesslin for the Boks' record defeat at the hands of the All Blacks in Dunedin. The prodigiously talented pivot's confidence was shattered, but a move to fullback has seen him performing well for the Natal Sharks again.

He has started all his tour games for the midweek side at fullback and only last week, against the England Divisional XV, did he shift to flyhalf at halftime. Before the Test against Wales, Viljoen "threatened" to include Du Toit in his side with the instruction to boot the ball 60, 70 metres at every opportunity if the Welsh decided to keep the roof of the stadium open, but it never materialised.

Viljoen said they wanted to run the ball against the Baabaas. "We want to keep the ball in hand. The roof will be closed on Sunday and that suits us. We want to run the ball and that's why I'm looking at Gaffie. It will be the ideal situation to introduce him; there is less pressure and that's why I'm looking at moving Percy back to flyhalf and play Gaffie at the back."

The team to play the Barbarians will be named on Thursday or Friday. Athletic lock Hottie Louw, the other midweek team player who has stayed behind, also stands a good chance of playing. The powerful Louw deserves the recognition after an outstanding season at Super 12 and Currie Cup level.

The Springboks have two days off from training, but on Wednesday they will be back on the field before concluding their preparation with an indoor session on Thursday in Cardiff.
