League venue in bid for international

Leeds Rhinos' Headingley ground could emerge as a contender, along with Old Trafford, as a potential host of an England Rugby Union test during next Autumn's international series.

The RFU are looking to roll out games away from the Twickenham HQ and have invited applications from stadia in the north, an opportunity Leeds' Managing Director David Howes was keen the seize on.

The English are due to play, like this year, Australia and South Africa in November, and instead of Argentina are due to meet Romania in the third game.

Fixtures have been played in the north before with 60,000 turning up to watch England New Zealand at Old Trafford three years ago and a sizeable attendance at Anfield in a World Cup warm up game against a team of Premiership all stars last year.

But, having successfully staged two Rugby League World Cup ties at Headingley this winter and a recent England A match, stadium officials believe that, despite not being all-seater, the venue could provide an unique atmosphere.

"Whilst the major football club stadia may offer the opportunity for more revenue because they are all-seater, Headingley has a unique atmosphere and can cater for the corporate side. It just depends what the RFU objective is," said Howes.
