Boks sign 'admission of guilt'
December 11, 2000

Almost the entire Springbok squad and their management team have signed an "admission of guilt" document in which they express regret about the consequences of apartheid. They also admit to their failure to take responsibility for the past.

The document - called "A Home for All" - forms part of a special campaign that starts on December 16. Die Burger newspaper reported that 29 players - including coaches Harry Viljoen and André Markgraaff, captain André Vos and senior players Joost van der Westhuizen, Corné Krige and Chester Williams - signed the declaration.

ANC MP Carl Niehaus and TRC commissioner and former Black Sash chairperson Mary Burton are heading the group that initiated the campaign.

They describe the campaign as a "non-partisan initiative of a group of white South Africans who believe that it is necessary that whites admit to the damage and consequences of apartheid, to contribute to the fight against racism and to empower previously disadvantaged communities".

As part of the campaign, a development and reconciliation fund will be established through which "whites can admit their guilt to blacks". This fund will focus mainly on literacy projects.

Niehaus said on Sunday that about 100 people had already signed the declaration.
