Agressive forwards a prerequesite for Boks
December 13, 2000

Springbok assistant coach André Markgraaff says they are going to make a dominant pack a prerequisite.

While there has been a lot of talk about a ball-in-hand game, the Boks realise they need a strong, aggressive pack if they want to set it into motion. England have shown up both Australia and the Boks in this regard, while the French forwards are set to pose big problems for the Boks next year when they visit South Africa for two Tests in June.

"Part of our plan is to again bring in a physical presence in the forwards. We know we have shortcomings in the forwards, but it is something we intend to rectify," Markgraaff told the SuperSport Zone website.

"The ball-in-hand game we want to play depends on having a physical presence in the forwards as well as in going forward, and we'll be paying attention to this aspect of our play.

"We must be careful not to expect too much too soon, but this is something really exciting we're busy with. I understand the need to see immediate results, but if the public are patient and we are able to put in place the kind of regular squad practice that England do I can see Springbok rugby starting to set the tone again."

Commenting on how things have changed since he was in charge in 1996, Markgraaff said: "I think the standard has improved since I was involved - especially in the backs.

"We have always had outstanding loose forwards and I know there are tight forwards available to give us a physical presence. I'm really looking forward to being part of the process that Harry (Viljoen) has started."
