Newlands blow for Stormers
December 15, 2000

Stormers captain Corne Krige is "very disappointed" at the decision taken by the team's board on Thursday to play two "home" Super 12 games in George and Wellington next season.

In the past, the South Western Districts Eagles (George) and Boland (Wellington) have sold their Super 12 game rights to Western Province. This allowed the WP-dominated Stormers squad to play all their home games at Newlands, a major factor behind their record as South Africa's most successful Super 12 region in recent times.

But the Eagles and Boland have decided to retain their rights for next season's games, which means Newlands will host only four and not six Stormers matches. The Stormers are slated to play the Reds in George and to end their Super 12 programme against local rivals the Sharks in Wellington.

Springbok flanker Krige believes the Stormers board's decision could adversely affect his team's chances of becoming the first SA region to win the Super 12.

"I'm very disappointed. We've proved how successful we can be when we play in front of the fantastic Newlands crowds.

"It doesn't make sense to make us play away from Newlands. If we hadn't produced the results there in the past, then it would be different. There would be a motivation for us to move.

"Other teams like the Sharks have been forced to play at venues like Telkom Park, when most of their support is in Durban and that is where they perform best. They've failed when this has happened, but learnt from their mistakes.

"I hope the same doesn't happen to the Stormers and hopefully the matter is not cast in stone and there is still a chance to play all our games at Newlands."

Stormers Board chairman Joey Daniels confirmed the venue ruling. "In terms of the agreement between the three union partners, Boland and SWD are each entitled to host one of the 'home' games.

"In the past, Boland and SWD have agreed that these games be played at Fedsure Park Newlands. However, this year, these unions have decided to exercise their rights to host these games", said Daniels.

The confirmed dates and home games for the Stormers Super 12 schedule are as follows:

Saturday, 24 February - Fedsure Stormers v Cats, Fedsure Park Newlands

Saturday 7, April - Fedsure Stormers v Reds, George

Saturday, 14 April - Fedsure Stormers v Crusaders, Fedsure Park Newlands

Saturday, 21 April - Fedsure Stormers v Blues, Fedsure Park Newlands

Friday, 27 April - Fedsure Stormers v Chiefs, Fedsure Park Newlands

Saturday, 12 May - Fedsure Stormers v Sharks, Wellington
