Mallett tapes still missing
December 20, 2000

Police and officials from the Department of Internal Affairs raided former Springbok media liaison officer Alex Broun's Camps Bay home on Tuesday morning.

According to police officials, they were looking for the stolen transcripts and tapes that went missing from former Springbok coach Nick Mallett's hearing at the South African Rugby Football Union's offices (Sarfu) back in October.

Captain Rod Beer told Die Burger on Tuesday that no tapes or other evidence was found.

The tapes, which were recorded by an independent company, went missing on October 2 after the first part of Mallett's disciplinary hearing into his criticism of the high ticket prices for the final Tri-Nations Test against Australia in Durban.

Sarfu chief executive Rian Oberholzer laid a charge of theft at the Claremont police station on October 10, after which a magistrate issued the search warrant for Tuesday's raid.

Broun handed in his resignation a month earlier after he felt Sarfu accused him of not doing his job properly. He maintained he knew nothing about the article in which Mallett allegedly told an undercover reporter of the high ticket prices.

He could not be reached for comment on Tuesday and is said to be leaving the country again on Thursday.
